The Phonograph
Þ 1877. Thomas Edison invented the Phonograph. It is a device used to record and p
lay sounds, typically music. It used a piece of tin foil wrapped around a spinning cylinder.
Þ 1878. First time music is put on a record. It was “Yankee Doodle” played by Jules L
evy.
Þ 1889. San Francisco becomes home to the first “phonograph parlor.” Customers were able to request a song for a nickel.
Þ 1888. Frank Lambert records Handel’s choral music at the Crystal Palace in Lo
ndon, which is believed to be the oldest recording still in existence today.
Þ 1890. Record companies began to mass-produce their records.
