Airplanes - Julia Nuara



1896- Langley attempted to make the first workingpiloted heavier-than-air aircraft.
Langley began experimenting withrubber-band powered models and gliders in 1887.

1899-
Wilbur devised a simple system that twisted or"warped" the wings of a biplane, causing it to roll right or left.They tested this system in a kite, then a series of gliders.


1900-
Their first two gliders, flown in 1900and 1901, failed to perform as the Wrights had hoped. The gliders did notprovide enough lift nor were they fully controllable.


1901-
First successful flying model
Samuel Pierpont Langleybuilds a gasoline-powered version of his tandem-winged "Aerodromes."The first successful flying model to be propelled by an internal combustionengine.
1902-
During the winter of 1901-1902 Wilbur and Orville built a wind tunneland conducted experiments to determine the best wing shape for an airplane.





1910-
First takeoff from a ship; Eugene Ely pilots a Curtiss biplane on the first flight to take off froma ship.


The U. S. Postal Serviceinaugurates airmail service from Polo Grounds in Washington, D.C., on May 15. The distance of theroute was 218 miles, and one round trip per day was made, six days a week. ArmyAir Service pilotsflew the route until August10, 1918,when the Post Office Department took over the entire operation with its own planes and pilots.



Airmail service hadbegun as early as 1912, when it seemed that the airplane might develop into apracticable means of transportation. Recommendations were made to Congress thatyear to appropriate $50,000 to start an experimental service.




1919

U.S. Navy aviators make the first airplane crossing of the North Atlantic
U.S. Navy aviators in Curtiss NC-4 flying boats, led Lt. Cdr. Albert C. Read, make the first airplane crossing of the North Atlantic, flying from Newfoundland to London with stops in the Azores and Lisbon. A few months later British Capt. John Alcock and Lt. Albert Brown make the first nonstop transatlantic flight, from Newfoundland to Ireland.

1927-
On May 21, Charles Lindberghcompletes the first nonstop solo flight across the Atlantic, traveling 3,600 milesfrom New York to Paris in a Ryan monoplane named the Spirit of St. Louis.


First transpacific mail service Nov 22 1935
Pan American inauguratesthe first transpacific mail service, between San Franciscoand Manila, on November 22, and the first transpacific passenger service inOctober the following year
